WORK to improve a key cycling route will soon begin.

The project to improve a route that links Havant with Emsworth will start on Monday.

Widening and resurfacing of the current red cycle lanes on Havant Road, between Selangor Avenue and Bridge Road, is aimed at improving safety for cyclists.

Originally the cycle lanes were surfaced using anti-skid material, but the surface has since deteriorated, making for an uncomfortable ride, putting cyclists off using them.

The lanes will be resurfaced in tarmac and left black except across junctions, and widened from 1.2m to 1.5m.

Crossing points at Barn Close and Selangor Avenue will be rebuilt to remove the cycle by-passes which collect water and are difficult to clean and maintain, and islands in the middle of the road will be enlarged.

Safety will be improved for students attending Warblington School from Emsworth.

The work will be carried out by local contractors Caroway.
