HOUSEHOLDERS are being urged to prepare their pipes for the winter now so they do not freeze and crack.

Portsmouth Water, WaterSafe and the Met Office have joined together in a bid to stop flooding misery when the weather turns icy with the Get Ready for Winter Campaign.

Portsmouth Water managing director Neville Smith said pipe lagging and insulation now can save a lot of hassle in the future.

Portsmouth Water has produced a leaflet called Wrap Up For Winter containing simple and practical advice to help customers protect pipework this winter.

Mr Smith added: ‘I urge our customers to read and follow the advice contained in this leaflet.

‘It really is worth protecting your property, burst pipes can cause severe damage and are expensive to repair.’

Mr Smith said research shows, despite 91 per cent of households in the south east saying they know water pipes can freeze and burst in cold weather, only 12 per cent insulate their pipes and only a quarter have a plumber’s number to hand in case of emergencies.
