In the first operation of its kind, plain-clothed officers toured pubs and clubs in Fareham town centre.
Police visited Chicago Rock Café, The Brass Monkey, The Crown and The Vanguard two Saturdays running to keep an eye on bar staff.
While no-one
was given an £80 fine – the punishment for serving a drunk customer – police say the undercover operation will now be spread out across the whole of Fareham as well as Gosport and Havant.
Sgt Roy Jennings, Fareham's licensing officer, said the operation was begun because police have to deal with at least half-a-dozen drunken incidents in Fareham town centre on any weekend.
He added: 'There are continuous problems with people being drunk and disorderly when pubs and clubs kick out.
'This is another tool in the crackdown on rowdy and anti-social behaviour.
'We've done this operation to try to prevent drunks slipping out on to the street and causing trouble.
'We want to make it safe for the public. But we also want to help people be sensible.
'Our message to them is to know how much they are capable of having, and not going too far and potentially ending up in a police cell.'
When police carried out the operation, they were looking to identify drunk people and then monitor their next trip to the bar. Police say a person is drunk if their eyes are glazed, their speech is slurred and they are unsteady on their feet.
Officers also look out for particularly rowdy behaviour.
During the operation, officers saw about a dozen drunk people but on every occasion, staff refused them service.
Sgt Jennings said: 'The pubs and clubs really do deserve a pat on the back. They did a fantastic job. It was a very positive operation.'
Police hope to do more operations on a regular basis in the future.
