PEOPLE in Portsmouth are being watched more closely than almost anywhere else in the UK, according to a new study.
Portsmouth City Council owns 1,454 CCTV cameras, the joint highest number in the UK, according to research from privacy group Big Brother Watch.

The cameras are trained on the activities of a daytime population of 186,701, meaning there are 7.8 cameras per 1,000 people in the city, the second highest ratio after the Outer Hebrides.

Elsewhere, Fareham owns 75 cameras to watch 107,977 people, Havant's got 73 for a population of 116,849, Gosport has 42 for 76,415 people and West Sussex operates 570 for 753,614.

Big Brother Watch's study shows that in less than a decade, the number of CCTV cameras controlled by local councils has risen from 21,000 to 60,000.

Group's director, Alex Deane, said: 'The evidence for the ability of CCTV to deter or solve crimes is sketchy at best.'

PCC has cameras all over Commercial Road Precinct. My bike was nicked one lunch time from outside Nat West Bank, which is directly in front of their camera. Net result was that nobody at PCC had the time to look at such a trivial matter !!

big brother this, big brother that !! bluboy3579 dont blame the pcc about looking at it,its up to the police to request to review the cctv you will find so blame the police, everyone moans about cctv but are the first when something happens or goes wrong to them and ask if the cctv has seen anything.the operators do a bloody good job in crime prevention and catch real life footage or crimes happening...you see in the press about drug dealers or people who break into houses or cars getting caught,,the cctv network catch that and relay it to police so these scum are caught..people who drive around with no tax or insurance are picked up on cameras and the police take these people off the road..people who moan about cctv dont see the bigger picture even your traffic reports on the radio when driving home use cctv so you all can avoid the jams..just one last thing to prove a point...remember that poor chap that was just murdered because he was gay in the lords court area in portsmouth ? and that big thug that killed him !!! well cctv caught that man on cctv so just ease up you big brother moaners..our pcc cameras and the great operators who man them cameras 365 days a year,24 hours a day try and make the streets of portsmouth a safe place to walk and to get the a*&% holes off the street..ps sorry your bike got stolen
