A cable car to connect Gosport to Portsmouth was just one of the ideas to come out of a consultation into how to improve Gosport's waterfront.
Residents have the chance to have their say on the regeneration of the area during a consultation exercise taking place this week.

Gosport Borough Council and Colin Buchanan consultants have come up with the first stages of the plans but want to hear from as many residents as possible about what they would like to see for the waterfront by the end of the week.

The council hopes the blueprint will pave the way for transforming Gosport into a tourist destination.

The proposed development stretches from the historic Royal Clarence Yard at one end of Gosport to Haslar Marina at the other, and includes the High Street shopping area. The cable car idea was among dozens submitted by members of the public. Others include hotels, conference suites, performance halls, shops, houses, restaurants as well as an 'iconic' landmark building..

Among those visiting was Diane Daniels, of Fort Road, Gosport, who said: 'Anything that improves Gosport would be brilliant. But they need to sort out the problems with the A32 to get more people to come here first. It is a beautiful marina but we are really about 20 years behind everybody else here.'

Cllr Mark Hook, leader of the council, has previously said the development was likely to cost more than £100 million. Peter Dijkhuis, associate director at Colin Buchanan, said: 'We are still in the early stages of the masterplan.

'We want to gauge the response to these ideas and this exhibition gives people a chance to come along and have a look at their own pace.

'Gosport is a fantastic place and it just needs everybody to believe that. We have to accept we have been through the worst recession and we want to minimise the risk to developers.'

Mary Wells, of Crown Mews, Clarence Road, Gosport, said: 'It's early days, I wonder how long all of this will take.

'It looks a good idea but I wonder whether it will actually work out.' The exhibition is open from 9am until 7pm at The Discovery Centre in Gosport until Saturday.

Good to see the council looking forward, now let's hear from all the knockers and doom merchants.

Yes- here are my pick of reasons not to:
1) Migratory feeding paths of bats
2) Bus drivers on the new Fareham/Gosport road will be distracted and keep crashing into migratory bats
3) Cable cars passing overhead will disturb the magnetic fields of bottom feeding fish
4) Brent geese won't have a uninterrupted view of the horizon as thay fly from Farlington Marshes to anywhere else PFC wanted a new ground
5) Privacy - people can see in my house as I get undressed and put me off waving at the people on the top deck of the bus as it goes past.
6) PV's ducks will want a Council Tax reduction, due to the ruined view/lowering of standards in their neighbourhood.
7) Any bandwaggon excuse from an upcoming MP who wants an extra vote.
Next project please.

I smell a white elephant.... lets sort out the regular travel requirements before developing a waste of time in such Millenium Dome proportions.

Mark Hook is living in cloud cuckoo land! Who on earth is going to invest £100 million in Gosport at this time? The Council has been talking about redeveloping the bus station site for years. Nothing has happened before and I doubt whether anything will happen now.

'Who on earth is going to invest £100 million in Gosport at this time?'

Firstly no single developer will judging by how large an area this covers. 2/3 years down the line the economy's going to be in much better shape. This plan's not going to come to fruition overnight is it. That's why there is a plan; to coordinate development over a long period of time. Oh how I hate naysayers, cynics and pessimists. You would presumably prefer things stay just as they are. 'Let nothing change, its what I know, I'm such a boring person I would actually prefer a bus station to stay as the focal point of Gosport' Get a grip, its soooooooooooo tedious.

Although a cable car ride over would be nice, its not going to solve any congestion problems. We have a ferry to cross over to Portsmouth.

To encourage companies into Gosport something has to be done to make it more attractive. Might be worth it on the long run to spend 100m however, that 100m will no doubt end up being 200m.

Perhaps some people are just realists who know the workings of Gosport Council!!

Next thing we know Mark Hook will want to stop the ferry service in order to promote his cable car idea.

After all it would save his Council spending £3.5 million of public money on a new pontoon.

Maybe there's a brain behind his dotty ideas after all?

How about a road out of Gosport first?

How much in improvements to the A32 will £100 million buy?
