A Royal Marine has appeared in court charged with the murder of Royal Navy sailor Kyle Bartlett.
Luke Grant Morton, 21, was released on bail after an eight-minute hearing at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court.

The commando, from Manchester, hid his face under a brown anorak as he left the court.

He is the third marine to be charged after the murder of 21-year-old Mr Bartlett in the Walkabout bar, Guildhall Walk, Portsmouth, in May.

Fair-haired Morton wore a blue and white striped shirt with cufflinks, black tie, black trousers and black shoes, when he appeared in the wooden-panelled dock in Court 2 yesterday.

Standing to attention in the dock, which is surrounded on three sides by glass, he spoke quietly to confirm his name, date of birth and address in Rochdale Road, Middleton, Manchester.

His next appearance will be at Winchester Crown Court on August 14.

Morton sat in the dock with a ramrod-straight back as magistrates conferred about whether to grant him conditional bail.

He answered: 'Yes, sir,' when asked if he understood his bail conditions.

These are, that he must sleep on board the Devonport-based HMS Albion or at his Manchester home, obey a 7pm-7am curfew, not contact either of his co-accused and he must surrender his passport.

Morton left the court building in Winston Churchill Avenue flanked by members of his family and with the hood of the anorak pulled down firmly over his face.

Mr Bartlett, a Marine Engineering Technician in HMS Liverpool, a Portsmouth-based Type 42 destroyer, was repeatedly kicked and punched in the bar brawl on Tuesday, May 6.

Stunned pub-goers surrounded the badly injured young man as paramedics tried to revive him.

Mr Bartlett was taken to Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham, with severe head injuries and died less than 24 hours later.
