Lido opened

On this day in 1935 Portsmouth’s open air swimming pool, Hilsea Lido, was opened by lord mayor Frank Privett.

The pool took nine months to build and boasted a 10m-high diving tower, the only one in Hampshire.

The lido complex included a cafe with dance floor, a paddling pool, facilities for sunbathing, changing rooms for 768 adults and 189 children and room for 1,000 spectators.

Floodlighting was installed for night bathing and a public address system enabling ‘gramophone recordings to be radiated’ – from John Sadden’s The Portsmouth Book of Days.
