Graham Stephens e-mailed from his home in Australia within hours of the pictures of the Yorkshire Grey pub appearing here and online at portsmouth.co.uk earlier this week.

The photographs of the hostelry in Guildhall Walk brought memories flooding back for him, particularly of his days playing in a band there.

And from Down Under he yearns for the traditional English pub that was once the Yorkshire Grey. Graham says: ‘I spent many happy hours there when it was run by Charlie and Maureen Bennett.

‘Charlie was always keen on entertainment and I was in one of the groups, Indigo Light, who played there on numerous occasions.

‘Charlie, who was a natural publican, ran a good pub and a tight pub. There was very little trouble. Later he bought a hotel on Southsea seafront. There is nothing like that here in Australia.’

He sent the two pictures here of him in action at the pub and of Charlie and Maureen.
