With today’s satellite systems and aerial photography, map-making must be comparatively easy.
But this map of Portsea Island was drawn in 1717 when all the surveyors could do was walk and sail around the island.
Most of it is relatively to scale and many of the lines of today’s roads can be made out even from 295 years ago.
Notice that Portchester Castle is named Caesar Castle. I wonder how many of you have ever heard of that before?
