Now, here’s a fine body of men and they owe it all to the rigours of the Royal Hampshire Regiment.

In particular Gordon Allen and Joe Williams.

They joined up simultaneously in the early 1960s and were both posted to the Caribbean, serving in Jamaica and British Honduras (now Belize).

But it was not until they were transferred with the regiment to Munster, Germany, that they struck up a friendship that would last to this day. Both are now in their 70s, but on different sides of the Atlantic.

Gordon, of Devonshire Avenue, Southsea, says: ‘By that time I was a keen bodybuilder and weightlifter.

‘Joe and I started to train together and eventually we decided to become physical training instructors.’

They completed a preliminary course at Sennelager, Germany, before qualifying back home in Aldershot. They then returned to Munster to keep the men fighting fit.

When they left the army Gordon returned to Portsmouth and Joe to Exeter and they both opened gyms and became competitive bodybuilders.

Joe moved to Florida, married and has two successful health clubs, says Gordon.

And Gordon went on to contest the 1969 Mr Universe contest as well as striking up a lasting friendship with Arnold Schwarzenegger who trained at the Portsmouth gym in the 1960s.
