Age shall not weary me nor the years condemn – possibly

I am actually rather excited about my drive-time show tomorrow evening. It’s coming live from the top of the Spinnaker Tower as my radio station hosts the Gunwharf Quays fireworks.

We are bringing The Vamps to the city to play before the fireworks go off.

In my opinion this band could well be the next One Direction, but with credibility.

Although they are in their teens and still classed as a boyband they do play their own instruments and write their own songs.

I’m pleased I still get excited about doing these kinds of interviews.

It struck me this week that at 40 I am, at least, now twice as old as they are.

How on earth did that happen?

I remember being one of the first presenters to interview The Spice Girls (Mel B really is that loud) and No Doubt (Gwen Stefani really is that beautiful) in the UK back in 1996 when I was a fresh-faced 23-year-old.

Down the decades I’ve been lucky enough (or not as the case might be) to interview many pop bands.

However, after a while, I admit, you just go through the motions.

That happens when some artists clearly cannot be bothered and would rather be somewhere else.

This is very frustrating as you still have to be professional and want the interview to be entertaining for listeners.

One word answers are certainly NOT the way to impress your fans.

I cannot wait for the day an interviewer stands up to a celebrity and tells them to leave if they are not interested in speaking respectfully to their fans.

I wonder if that will happen tomorrow?

But in all seriousness, I still get those butterflies of excitement when interviewing guests or hosting an event from the stage.

That buzz is what makes my job rich and interesting.

So I look forward to seeing you tomorrow evening as the latest in a long line of teenage heartthrobs takes to the stage and girls swoon all over the place.

Before I laugh, I remember my wife swooned at Take That, my mum The Beatles and my nan Glen Miller.

Ooops. I’ll get a whack for that one!
