ROYAL Navy personnel were given a treat when they received a visit from a gin distillery.

The mess of HMS Collingwood, in Fareham welcomed Silent Pool Distillery, based in Surrey.

Its new spirit is named after Admiral Lord Cuthbert Collingwood, who took control of the British fleet during the Battle of Trafalgar after the death of Admiral Lord Nelson.

And, coincidentally, master distiller Corey Mason’s family can be traced back to Admiral Lord Collingwood.

Ian McCulloch, founding partner of Silent Pool Distillery, said: ‘We took Silent Pool Gin, English Rose Gin, our range of Schnapps and Wry Vodka for the officers to try, as well as the Admiral Collingwood Gin.

‘Everyone enjoyed the evening and we presented the wardroom with a case of Admiral Collingwood gin.’
