Proposals for the 83-bed hotel behind the shopping centre by Fareham library were unveiled this morning.

The identity of the hotel chain is being kept under wraps with Fareham Borough Council and the centre’s owners, the Roubaix Group Ltd set to work together to bring forward the plans.

It will be built on top of the shops replacing long-term empty office space adding two extra storeys to the back of the shopping centre.

Councillor Sean Woodward, executive leader of the council, said: ‘For a long time now, there has been interest from hotel operators to expand into Fareham town centre.

‘Our joint proposal for a new hotel will help attract visitors and business to the town and sends a clear signal of the council’s commitment to and confidence in the future of the centre.

‘It will be great to get a hotel right in the town centre as it’s a location that has really been calling for one.’

The council’s decision to work on the plans is still subject to call-in at this stage while a deal is ironed out between the parties.

A planning application for the hotel will be submitted in spring next year and it is hoped that work will begin on the site later in the year.
