Dozens of people fled the centre in Forest Way, Gosport, last night amid fears the building was on fire, with a member of the public reportedly seeing smoke.

Firefighters rushed to the scene shortly after 5pm but the smoke alert proved to be a false alarm.

Soon afterwards, Gosport Borough Council confirmed that a burst pipe was responsible for the incident and that the centre was closed for urgent repairs.

This morning, a statement on the centre’s Facebook page said: ‘The following activities and facilities are open: Gym, Studio classes, Sports Hall activities, football pitches and ground floor accessible change.

‘All other facilities are unfortunately closed including Fitness Change & Pools.

‘We are working to get everything back to normal as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and we apologise for inconvenience caused.’
