Daniel Jackman, 42, and Charlene Reed, 36, both of Forton Road, Gosport, were handed community orders at Portsmouth Magistrates' Court after their dog Mitzy was found trapped in a bathroom infested with fleas, with open sores and hair loss.

They were banned from keeping dogs by a judge today.

Now the RSPCA's chief inspector Paul Williams has warned pet owners of their responsibilities.

He said: 'Pet owners have a responsibility to care for their animals.

'That includes ensuring any health issues are dealt with promptly to avoid distress and suffering.'
