Havant Borough Council tweeted this morning that the four animals were grazing on the Purbrook Way roundabout in Leigh Park, but a Hampshire Constabulary spokesman confirmed the incident happened yesterday at 4.20am.

The spokesman added that the member of the public who called initially said there was one horse, but on arrival four were discovered by officers.

The animals were locate and taken to a field east of Hulbert Road.
