A FIRE believed to have been started by a member of the public took firefighters an hour to extinguish.

Crews from Southsea were called to a walkway in Paulsgrove behind Allaway Avenue and Paulsgrove Primary School, at 6.20pm on Saturday.

A spokesperson from Southsea Fire Station said: ‘The fire was the size of a 10m by 5m area.

‘Access to it was difficult, which is why it took an hour to extinguish.

‘We had to use knapsack pumps to get to the scene.

‘Members of the public were gathered round and there were reports the incident was suspicious, but police were not present.’
