The 37-foot Haven Star, with two men and two women on board, reported the fire while east of Cowes Harbour.

A volunteer RNLI team from Cowes rushed to the stricken vessel's aid.

Although the crew on board the Haven Star managed to put out the fire with two powder extinguishers before the lifeboat team arrived, the yacht's loss of power meant it still needed the RNLI's assistance.

A stern tow then took the yacht to its base at Hornet Marina, Haslar, Gosport.

The lifeboat, which launched at 1.10pm, returned to station at 3.30pm.
