Prestigious regatta makes a return to our shores

Portsmouth Regatta returns to Southsea on Saturday, and it is set to be the biggest year yet with more than 40 vessels taking part.

Organised by the Royal Naval Club and Royal Albert Yacht Club, Portsmouth Sailing Club, the Victory Class and the Eastney Cruising Association, this year’s regatta will feature races for club-class boats, squibs, victorys and the Solent IRC Owners Association.

The first race will start at 11am. Prizegiving will take place at Hornet, Gosport at 4pm.

Proceeds from the regatta will go towards the Portsmouth Sail Training Trust (PSTT) which aims to help young people from the Portsmouth area by developing essential life skills through practical learning.

Edward Phillips, chairman of PSTT, said: ‘We are delighted with the ongoing support from The Royal Albert and Royal Naval Yacht club and also Portsmouth Sailing Club for the PSTT.

‘Being recognised as the official charity partner to the Portsmouth Regatta is a huge honour for the Trust and helps us build awareness about the work of the Trust and the amazing results our young people are achieving.’

Liz Rushall, a trustee of PSTT, added: ‘We are a young charity, working with over 65 young people on a regular basis teaching them skills such as sailing, rowing, and navigation .

‘They learn STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) and gain transferable skills for work.’

The PSTT crew have six boats competing this weekend.

The event will be sponsored by Camber Wines, dpfx Printers, Haslar Marina, Kemp Sails, Saulet Townsend Solicitors and YouBoat chandlery.
