THEY have saved countless lives. But this morning a formation of Sea King Mk4 helicopter flew for the final time over Portsmouth.

The group of five of the Royal Navy’s iconic search and rescue helicopters, and a Merlin helicopter, soared over the city’s harbour and the naval HQ on Whale Island.

The region-wide flypast was the final farewell of the Mk4 aircraft fleet which is being decommissioned at the end of the month.

The Sea King Mk4 has been flying for 36 years with the Commando Helicopter Force, based at RNAS Yeovilton, Somerset.
