Hundreds of Hampshire workers were told their jobs were at risk after a high street bank and an aerospace firm announced thousands of redundancies.

Barclays revealed plans to cut 6,000 jobs – a tenth of its workforce – in a massive programme aimed at saving £200m a year.

It came as engineering giant British Aerospace, which had only recently merged with Marconi’s electronics arm for £8bn, said it would cut 90 staff in Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight.
