More than 1,500 homes in the north of Portsmouth were left without power this morning.

Residents in the PO6, PO16 and PO17 areas reported a power cut to Scottish & Southern Electricity Networks shortly before 10am.

Engineers have been sent to restore the supply, and it is estimated all power will be turned back on by about 4.45pm.

A SSEN spokewoman said 1,557 properties had been initially affected, with about four still without power at the last update.

They added: ‘I’ve been informed this power cut was caused by a tree branch coming into contact with our overhead network.

‘On occasions the power goes off, our priority is to restore our customers’ supplies as quickly and as safely as possible. We would like to thank our customers for their patience and apologise for any inconvenience as our engineers work to restore their power.’
