RESIDENTS are being warned not to be cheated out of their cash by scammers claiming they can save homeowners money on the council tax.

Cold callers are targeting people across the Portsmouth area with claims they can refund residents up to £3,000.

The firm asks people to pay for their services, saying they will look and see if an appeal can be lodged against the victim’s council tax banding.

However, Portsmouth City Council is warning residents that people do not need to pay for such a service – they can do it free of charge.

Councillor Lee Mason, the council’s resources boss, said: ‘Be wary of anyone calling claiming that you’re in the wrong council tax band and offering to re-valuate it for a fee. It’s likely to be a scam. You can have your home checked for free from the valuation office.’
