An unemployed man dreaming of getting his first big break in showbusiness is one of the latest entrants in our Instant Star talent contest.
Benji, 25, from Fareham Road, Gosport, has had a number of jobs since he left Fareham College six years ago.

But Benji, who studied musical theatre for two years, really wants to be a singing star.

He said: ‘I’m trying to establish myself on the cabaret circuit as a singer, but I’m not getting the breaks I need at the moment so this competition could be a really great platform for me.’

Until recently, Benji worked during the day in a children’s play area, while in the evenings and at weekends he entered talent contests such as the recent Search for A Star on South Parade Pier in Southsea, where he got through to the semi-finals.

He said: ‘I sing a wide variety of songs, from rock to swing. I can adapt my voice to all kinds of styles.’

For next Monday’s Instant Star auditions at the Salvation Army Hall in Albert Road, Southsea, Benji will sing The Who's Pinball Wizard, from the 1969 rock opera Tommy.

Benji said: ‘It’s got lots of guts, so it’s great fun to perform.’

There’s still time to enter Instant Star, but you’ll need to hurry as the closing date is tomorrow so get e-mailing now. Full details are below.

We’re looking for two talented performers to appear on stage in 3Js to the Kings, a two-night variety show featuring the cream of local talent that is starts the Kings’ autumn season – one winner will perform on Saturday September 20 and one on Sunday September 21.

The auditions on Monday aim to find a pair of previously unknown acts. It’s a variety show, so whatever you do – singing, dancing, acting, juggling, conjuring or anything else – we’ll consider you.
