New mum Pamela Jones and her four-month-old daughter Seren give a thumbs-up to breastfeeding as part of a national awareness week.
She had problems getting started with breastfeeding her youngster but stuck with it and is now working with Portsmouth City Teaching Primary Care Trust to urge other mums to follow suit, promoting the message that breast milk can help protect babies against conditions including childhood diabetes, eczema, obesity and asthma.

The 34-year-old, from Southsea, said: 'I had a difficult pregnancy, meaning I had to have a Caesarean at the Princess Anne Hospital in Southampton. I really wanted to breastfeed because it felt like the one thing I could do for my baby but it didn't come naturally.

'Breastfeeding suits us now, and it's convenient when we are out.'

Trust health visitor Amanda Malthouse said: 'Breast milk is the ideal start for baby and mum, it's packed with goodness and helps protect against infections and disease.'
