ARTISTS will be taking a bus on a tour of Portsmouth in a bid to encourage people to take an interest in art.
The Art Bus will stop off at points in the city and persuade people to hop on.

It will drop them off at such places as the Aspex Gallery at Gunwharf Quays and Portsmouth School of Art, as well as at special exhibitions in Southsea Town Centre and Guildhall Square.

The aim is to bring art to the people as well as celebrating the Olympics coming to the UK in 2012.

Residents will be able to see the bus touring the city on Saturday, September 27, but the exact route is still to be worked out.

Portsmouth artist Jon Adams has been involved in the art bus preparations.

He is the man responsible for the Dream slogan which has appeared in places around the city, including Guildhall Square.

Mr Adams also helped design the Dream Birds – dove-shaped pieces of paper – which were released last month as part of the Olympic handover celebrations.

He said: 'I really enjoy being part of something where so many members of the public can get involved.'

To celebrate London 2012, works of art will also start appearing in places around Portsmouth.

The organisers have already got permission from Portsmouth City Council to put up poetry on lampposts.

Debenhams and Monsoon have already agreed to showcase pieces of art as part of the event.

Meanwhile, the Royal Naval Museum will display normally private art works as part of the Olympic celebrations.

Store rooms at the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard-based museum will also be opened to show hidden gems on September 27 and September 28.

This is one of 500 events held across the country as Olympic chiefs try to avoid the accusation that the 2012 Games will only benefit the capital.
