The annual St Mary's May Fair returned yesterday as hundreds of people flooded into the church grounds.
About 1,500 visited St Mary's Church in Fratton, Portsmouth, for the fun event.

Usually the May Fair brings the chance to climb to the top of the church tower. But with restoration work taking place to repair the stonework, visitors could only look from below at the scaffolding surrounding it.

Parish vicar Father Bob White said: 'It was an excellent day, as always, with the weather clearing just in time.

'Instead of letting people go up the tower we had examples of the stonework so they could see how it's crumbling and why the work is being done.

'We also had about 110 stalls, and some of them were saying they had raised between £300 and £500 for charity, so it was a good day for all involved.'
