With the major parties in Portsmouth neck-and-neck, the new lord mayor, Richard Jensen, finds himself in a position of real power.
When votes are split at meetings, he will have the casting, deciding vote.

Already the 36-year-old solicitor, who was elected to the council in 2006, is stamping his mark on proceedings by ruling debates.

At his first full council as chairman yesterday he slapped down outspoken trader and campaigner Mark Austin, in the public gallery, for saying 'barking mad' in the chamber, saying the language was inappropriate.

And Tory councillor Lee Hunt called him 'dictatorial'. But Cllr Jensen defended his actions, saying: 'It's right that the decision of the chair is respected.'

Mr Austin was not in the public gallery, Mr Austin was doing his normal polite questions to the council at the time he said the council "would be barking mad" to re elect Gearld Vernon Jackson as the leader, they proved him correct they are barking mad.

Unfortunately this article has been incorrectly reported.

I was not in the public gallery when I made those comments-I was in the chamber making a lawful deputation.

The rules are very clear and indeed councillors decided not to change the rules about members of the public-as reported in The News by Emily Pykett.

Now we have a Lord Mayor who is a Lib Dem, it appears he wants to change the rules at a whim, which certainly is not consistent with the will of the council members.

Though I feel he as erred-I wish him well for the forthcoming year.

Hi Pompey Toby(other page blocked)

If people disagree with me or indeed want to voice an alternative view I will not threaten them. I could have reported your comment as maybe unsuitable as it is totally inaccurate. However, I believe you take the rough with the smooth and I would like to set the record straight. In the first instant, no police officer threatened to throw me out, nor indeed did the PCSO, who approached me. I did not abuse the council leader either. I used a word these form of words, why did the Lib Dems, decide to ejaculate council taxpayers money on this by election, when it could have waited a few weeks for the May elections.

Lastly, a vicar was there who said that there is a Prayer called an Ejaculate -he could not see any problem.

Sour grapes, certainly not-I was just having an amusing evening with people who were extremely uncomfortable with the fact they were exposed as opportunists at the tax payers expense.
