POMPEY fans have joined forces with local musicians to sing up for Pompey as the date of the FA Cup final gets ever nearer.
Online Pompey supporters' club the Pompey Anoraks decided two weeks ago to do a reworking of Abide With Me – which they have renamed Abide Pom-pey.
The Solent Male Voice choir, Chichester City Brass and fellow Pompey Anorak Steve Woodhead all make up the musical parts of the song, which the Anoraks hope to sell online to raise money for local charities.
Pompey Anorak and musical director of the song Adam Hatton, 28, said: 'We wanted to do something epic to celebrate Pompey getting through to the FA Cup final.
'It wasn't about it being religious, but using a choir had the right feel about it.
'We wanted something that would give it justice.'
Within two weeks the song – written by Pompey Anorak John Seymour – has gone from an idea to a reality.
Adam, who is part of a local heavy metal band Dragon Eye Morrison, added: 'We didn't think it would actually happen and now we are almost finished – it might even get into the charts.'
Secretary of the choir Roy Sweasey, 78, hopes that their involvement will raise the profile of choirs and make them more appealing to younger audiences.
He said: 'We have never been asked to do something like this before but we were very enthusiastic to get involved.
'We have a lot of Pompey supporters here so that helps – we hope it might attract some younger singers into the choir too.'
Chairman of the choir Brian Goff, 71, added: 'All of the proceeds from this CD will go to charity and that is what we are about.'
The song will be available to download on major music websites, including i-tunes and HMV.
The group is recording the new song at Old Blacksmith Recording Studios, Hilsea, which has donated the recording time free of charge.
Dave Saunders, who is helping to produce the track, said: 'It has all gone really well – especially considering time has been short.
'We have had to record everyone separately and then it will be a case of putting it together at the studio.'
Adam added: 'We are hoping this will be the people's song. It's my dream to have it played at Wembley.'

>> Welsh superstar Katherine Jenkins will be the first person ever to sing the Welsh National Anthem at the FA Cup final.
Katherine will sing Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau when she performs at Wembley.
She had initially been asked to accompany Lesley Garrett in God Save The Queen. But Katherine asked the authorities to let her sing the Welsh National Anthem with the Coldstream Guards instead.
