It was the cover that captured the excitement of FA Cup Final day, putting Pompey's heroes in history before they made it themselves.
And now a framed copy of The News' front page from Saturday, May 17 will take its place in the Royal Naval Museum, at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard.

The editor of The News, Mark Waldron, handed over the memento to museum director Dr Colin White and it will take its place alongside other famous works.

The cover is an adaptation of William Overend's famous painting The Hero of Trafalgar. The 19th century characters were replaced by members of Pompey's squad by The News' design editor Graeme Windell, who put manager Harry Redknapp in the role of Lord Nelson.

And the team did not disappoint that day, beating Cardiff 1-0 with a goal courtesy of Kanu.

Mr Waldron said: 'I'm pleased to be presenting this painting. It marks a fantastic day for the whole of Portsmouth and I'm sure it will bring back happy memories for future visitors.'
