Thousands of people turned out at Goodwood yesterday to remember football legend Alan Ball in a special day devoted to the former Pompey manager.
Among those at the West Sussex racecourse for the Alan Ball Memorial Day was the World Cup winner's son, Jimmy Ball.
All races during the day were named after aspects of Alan Ball's footballing life – as well as one dedicated to Pompey's FA Cup final win.
Jimmy, 32, said: 'Dad would be really proud and a bit emotional because he loved Portsmouth Football Club, and in my opinion he was a large part of where they are today. He would have loved today.
'He was a man who enjoyed himself and lived life to the full and we had many a good day here at Goodwood.'
Ball died in April last year after a heart attack at his Warsash home.
About 7,000 people turned out to the race day yesterday with all proceeds going to the Bobby Moore Cancer Trust and a children's charity, Help a Local Child.
Event organiser Callum MacKay said: 'Although some say Alan Ball was always an Evertonian, I think a large part of his heart was in Portsmouth.
'He lived in the area and was very passionate about the club. Portsmouth are our local football club and we kept the last race title back in the hope Pompey would win the Cup.'
>> Pompey players will be taking the FA Cup to Goodwood on June 13 for an evening of racing.
