And the Havant College student was over the moon to find all the hard work had paid off and she had achieved top results – three As in government and politics, Tudor history and English language.

She is among thousands of youngsters who celebrated their A-level results yesterday in local schools and colleges.

Charlotte has overcome her suffering from a curvature of the spine called scoliosis.

The talented youngster, of Southleigh Road, Emsworth, said: 'Luckily the operations on my kidney and back fell in the holidays, but I had to take quite a bit of time off for appointments.

'I just about made it back to college which was really hard and in the end I had to complete both my first and second year politics A-level in one go. It was difficult but I did work hard.'

Because Charlotte was in danger of falling behind, the former Lavant House School pupil was given one on one learning support by tutors to make sure she reached her full potential.

Charlotte's fantastic results mean that she has won a place at Liverpool University to study history.

She said: 'I can't believe I'm going to be going to Liverpool, it's amazing. At the moment I don't think it has really sunk in its surreal.'

Studying at Liverpool has become something of a family tradition as Charlotte's cousin also studied dentistry there.

She said: 'I've even applied to stay in the same halls as my cousin and I've been so excited about it.

'The past few days have been nerve-racking but more than anything I'm just so relieved.'
