Children and their parents got a taste of what it was like to fire a cannon at sea at the Mary Rose Museum.
More than 1,200 people paid a visit to the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard for a special event called Meet the Tudor Gunner.

Visitors learned about gun drills including loading and firing them.

Staff also showed them how to use a wrought iron breech-loading cannon, which was typically used throughout the 1500s to defend ships like the Mary Rose in battle.

Terry Jones, visitor service manager at the Mary Rose Museum, said: 'For the families it is a little bit different and they like it. People like getting involved and they learn more when it is hands-on.

'You can read a book but if you take part it is the best way to understand something.'
