ARUNDEL CASTLE is one of the oldest and most magnificent castles in the whole of Europe, and it's on our doorstep.
The home of the Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshall and Premier Duke of England, it stands above the small West Sussex town of Arundel.
The castle contains arguably the largest and most valuable art collection of its kind in the country. As well as paintings by Canaletto, Van Dyck, Gainsborough and Mytens, there is an array of weapons and priceless furniture.
The building itself was founded on Christmas Day 1067 and was severely damaged in the Middle Ages as well as being twice besieged in the English Civil War before being restored by the 15th Duke in the 19th century.
It towers over the town and can be seen from miles around.
Open March 31-October 28, Tuesday to Sunday and bank holiday Mondays.
Full 'free flow' tickets – adults £12, children £7.50, children) £32. Just keep and grounds – all £6.50.
