Detectives are trying to solve the riddle of how a woman was left with cuts and bruises to her arms and legs after a night out.
They are trying to speak to a man caught on CCTV they believe could be a vital witness.

In the grainy image he appears to be black, wearing jeans and a grey jumper over a light coloured shirt.

He is thought to be between 23 and 30 years old wit
h short dark hair.

The man was seen walking along Arundel Street in Portsmouth in the early hours of the morning on Sunday, August 3.

At about that time a 27-year-old woman from Portsmouth had been on a night out with friends in Guildhall Walk and was making her way home.

During the journey she became separated from her friends, and when she got home at 2.25am realised that she had a number of cuts and bruises to her arms and legs.

Her walk home took about 15 minutes, but she has little memory of the journey.

Detective Constable Katie Holland said: 'We know that this woman took a route home past Tesco in Paradise Street and headed towards Crasswell Street, which is not far from her home.

'She appears to have met this man near to Tesco store and he has walked her to her door. We are very keen to speak to this man to find out if he saw what happened to the woman to account for her injuries. The woman is white and has long blonde hair. She is slim and of medium height, and was wearing a black dress, with knee high black socks.

'Please contact police as soon as possible. We are working to piece together this woman's movements on her way home and to find out how she got the cuts and bruises, and so any information could be very important to us.'

Anyone with any information in relation to this incident should contact DC Katie Holland at Fratton police station on 0845 045 45 45 or call Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111.
