A TEENAGER from Portsmouth will represent the city in marking the 90th anniversary of the end of the First World War on the battlefields of the Western Front.
The Imperial War Museum, in association with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, will lead the all-expenses paid visit to France and Belgium for Armistice, from Friday, November 7 to November 12.

Matthew Husselby, 16, is one of 26 young people
from across the UK, aged between 14 and 16, to win a place in the Away to Remember competition run by the Imperial War Museum's Their Past, Your Future programme, supported by the Big Lottery Fund.

Led by staff from the Imperial War Museum, Matthew and the competition winners will travel to sites such as Ypres Salient, Arras and the Somme.

There they will discover some of the remarkable stories of men and women who experienced life on the Western Front during the First World War.

Winners will also have the opportunity to represent their communities at commemorative events to mark the 90th anniversary of the Armistice.

Entrants were asked to respond to the questions: 'What impact did the First World War have on your community?' and 'What do you think about remembrance now and in the future?'

For his entry, Matthew considered the long-term impact on his family, school and local area.

'We are delighted by the high standard of entries to the competition which were well-researched and extremely imaginative,' said Dan Phillips, deputy director of Their Past, Your Future.

'The quality of submissions and enthusiasm shows that young people across the UK are interested in learning more about the First World War and also have some distinct views on why remembrance remains important to them and their generation.'
