Three pier-to-pier swimmers rescued

Three swimmers were rescued when they got into difficulties during an annual race between piers.
Dozens of hardy athletes braved the weather and chilly sea yesterday afternoon in the event off Southsea beach.
But during the mile-and-a-half race between Clarence and South Parade piers one swimmer had to be helped out of the water to a waiting ambulance suffering the effects of hypothermia because of the cold water.
Minutes later two more entrants suffering from fatigue called for assistance and were helped from the choppy sea near the Pyramids centre.
John Feltham, a spokesman for the RNLI lifeboat station at Eastney, Portsmouth, said: 'The RNLI lifeboat crew, Portsmouth and Southsea Volunteer Lifeguards, Portsea Rescue and coastguards were all there to make sure they could help anyone in difficulty.
'The safety boats covered the event effectively and were quickly on the scene to help these three who got into difficulties.'
