A senior Tory councillor has challenged the country's top tourism minister to return to Portsmouth to counter claims that England's tourist facilities are not up to scratch.
Margaret Hodge came under fire yesterday for saying British hotels are expensive and of poor quality.

The Labour MP told Holiday Which? magazine she likes to go to Italy, and added: 'Tourists need to be offered good deals and we have to make attractions better.'

Ms Hodge was in Portsmouth in July when she praised Spinnaker Tower bosses for leading the way in making Britain a tourist hotspot.

Portsmouth's deputy Tory leader Alistair Thompson said: 'She should return in light of her recent comments and take another look at the tower and see the other fabulous attractions we have in our city.

'I'm sure she would agree it is a great tourist destination.'
