The wife of Labour stalwart Syd Rapson has praised the staff at Queen Alexandra Hospital for saving her husband after he spent three days in a coma.
Mr Rapson Portsmouth North MP from 1997 until 2005, was rushed to hospital with a blocked bile duct and was given a slim chance of survival.
But after suffering pneumonia, renal failure and jaundice, he went through an emergency operation and is now on the mend.
Phyllis Rapson said: 'Syd survived thanks to the excellent care he was given.
'Throughout the whole experience QA hospital and its staff were magnificent.'
On September 7, Mr Rapson was rushed to the emergency department in acute pain.
He was immediately admitted and given tests, including a CT scan. His condition deteriorated and he had to have emergency surgery for a blocked infected bile duct.
He was then transferred to the critical care unit on a ventilator and was in a coma for three days before recovery began.
Mrs Rapson said: 'He is now at home recovering and awaiting a follow-up operation to remove his gall bladder.
'The expert care, compassion and kindness shown by all the staff was more than we could have imagined.
'The world-class skills employed are a great benefit to the people who need QA.'
Mr Rapson was an avid supporter of the redevelopment of the hospital during his time as an MP, inviting top health bosses to visit in a bid to raise its profile.
Mrs Rapson added: 'How well it is that on a very personal basis, the hospital has justified Syd's unswerving faith in their services.
'Thank you so much to the hospital its staff and everyone involved in Syd's care for giving me back the life of my beloved husband.'
Former Labour member and ex-Lord Mayor Jason Fazackarley said: 'I was sorry to hear Syd was so unwell and have been tracking his progress.
'It's good to hear he is over the worst of it and is home from hospital. Although I am no longer a Labour member I have always got on with Syd and wish him a speedy recovery.'
