Take a property for sale at Hardway in Gosport, for instance. Although it appears Georgian from the outside, complete with an upper floor window that’s bricked in as homage to the dreaded window tax and a parapet hiding the sloping roof, on the inside the aptly-named Georgian House is thoroughly modern and contemporary. That’s hardly surprising because, despite the period architecture, this house is among the most modern in the area.
Hardway, like Portchester across the widest part of Portsmouth Harbour, has known human habitation since Roman times. And both have also played important parts in modern history with Portchester the place of creation for many modern warships and Hardway the place of embarkation for hundreds of pieces of military hardware in the days leading up to and after D-Day in 1944.
With its situation adjacent to the waterfront and the resulting extensive views along Portsdown Hill and the more “natural” part of the Harbour inlet, the house has been designed with an L-shaped drawing room on the first floor, which it shares with the second and third bedrooms in addition to a family bathroom.
On the top floor there’s the master bedroom with its en-suite bathroom but sharing the same landing is the fourth bedroom, complete with shower room, which could be re-purposed as a dressing room or nursery.
As well as the upstairs drawing room, there’s an L-shaped living area extending the whole length of the ground floor and across its complete width at the rear. This creates an integrated open plan living area in line with contemporary thinking with a sitting area at the front and the superbly-equipped kitchen alongside the dining area at the rear.
Across the hallway, which has a curving period-style staircase, is a study with a cloakroom behind.
An in-out carriage drive graces the front of the property. At the rear is a screened garden with a patio directly behind the dining room that leads to the lawn.
Hardway has good access to the harbour at Gosport with its constant ferries across to Portsea Island, cutting out a long commute by road and giving access to mainline rail services.
