Ashdown: We must improve

JAMIE ASHDOWN has warned Pompey face FA Cup final heartbreak if they fail to turn up again.
The Pompey goalkeeper was helpless to prevent Danny Murphy's close-range header 14 minutes from time as his defence failed to mark properly from Jimmy Bullard's free-kick.

But Ashdown was unimpressed with the whole performance and was particularly disappointed by the marking at the crucial set-piece.

Ashdown said: 'I didn't think we turned up and we didn't put in a good performance.

'It's the FA Cup final next up and if we don't turn up again, all of the hard work we've put in this season will be for nothing.

'It's a shame the league season had to end like that.

'It's the third game on the trot we haven't picked up our men and that is very disappointing.

'I didn't have too much chance when it's six yards away.'

Although Ashdown was rarely troubled, he believes Fulham's extra desire just saw them edge home to preserve their Premier League status.

He said: 'It's always a difficult situation when you know the other team have got so much to play for.

'They really went for it because they knew had to go for the win, but I didn't think they created too much.

'They started to put some pressure on with a few set-pieces, but I suppose it is a factor we have next week to think about as well.

'We still wanted to win the game and finish on a high note.

'But perhaps they just wanted it that little bit more than us on the day.'

ONE FOOT IN THE GRAVE FANS?

VICTOR MELDREW ARE YOU A POMPEY FAN IN DISGUISE? Christ makes you wonder if there is something in the water down in Pompey cause Ive never known so many moaning pillocks in all my life.....I hate to say it but looks like our fan base isnt as instrumental as we all think and certainly not the 12th man we need right now.....What if we get success at the expensive of that loyal following we had all those years even when fighting relegation we had a smile on our face and sung our hearts out.....ARE WE GOING TO TURN OUT LIKE THE MOANING SCOUSERS?

One foot in the grave fans please go support someone else or start relising what a fantastic season we have had and with the icing on the cake to come :-)

Best finish ever in the Premier league and a place in the FA Cup final. What a terrible season we've had.

Let's not forget where we've been over the past god knows how many years. All those supporters that have thrown away their Man Utd rucksacks etc. within the last two years and jumped on the Pompey bandwagon can have them back.

Booing your team on the last day of a fantastic season?? Only proper fans required thankyou.

Traore so we finished 1 place higher than last year great apart from i paid £600 for my season ticket to watch goaless draws against liverpool, west ham,man city, everton probably more, put that with loses at home to boro, spurs & now a poor side like fulham, plus been very lucky & i think the last time i remember us playing well was chelsea at home.Season Ticket holder for 9 years now im entiled to boo yet another poor performance!

Traore, so are you saying that if it wasn't the last game of the season then booing is ok???? if the team plays poorly they get what they deserve, if they play well and lose then we can live with it but not 4 poor games in a row, tell me which of those 4 we have played well in??????

I can never understand people booing their own team no matter what, When i go to the game i hope the team 1)plays well 2) Win, If they loose ok i am pissed off for a hour or two but then look forward to the next game. If someone can prove that booing helps the players win their next game i will think about joining in but untill then i will just keep stuum

it may not help the players but how else can we let our feelings known

I dont understand why people accept mediocrity? These guys are paid tens of thousands of pounds a week, in campbells case over 100k a week. They havent played well since the Chelsea home game yet because we had a good start to the season its all ok? We've been woeful for over a month and lost games to relegation threatened sides basically through lack of effort. But apparently because we picked up a few results in August its all ok? Yes, on paper looks like a good season but a season is 9 months long and to finish where we did after the position we got ourselves in, especially given how easy our run in was, is disappointing. Unless you're happy to watch millionaires not even break sweat for 4 games on the bounce.

You are dead right Norberto, but some players not breaking sweat has been for more than four games.

For me it is the disappointment of knowing five weeks ago we could finish fifth with the so called "easiest" run in of all. Not only have we finished 8th, but we are 8 points behind Everton.

I know we have broken some records and hoodoos this season but the worst record is losing FOUR straight games for the first time in the Premiership AND against four of the "poorer" teams.

I was so disappointed yesterday that I was one of the ten thousand that did not stay behind because I feel they did not deserve an ovation for that performance plus we are playing next Saturday.

Hopefully we will beat Cardiff, get a fantastic ovation for an excellent performance and then we can celebrate into the night.

Otherwise, if we lose, I feel Sol is right to say this has been disappointing season.
