He was cast aside as a talented footballer with too much of an attitude problem. But Prince Boateng believes the combination of a move to Pompey and a settled family life is bringing the best out of him on the pitch.
The gifted midfielder was once hailed as the best young player in Germany during his formative years with Hertha Berlin but freely admits he got carried away by the adulation.

After some home truths from wife Jennifer kept him in check, an unsuccessful spell at Spurs then saw his confidence battered as he struggled to get his chance in the first team.

Paul Hart raised a few eyebrows when he tempted Boateng to Pompey in August in a £4m deal.

But the new recruit has already done enough in his short time at the club to show just how desperate he is to repay the manager's faith.

Boateng told The News: 'I didn't get the chance with Tottenham to show what I could do. But I'm enjoying every day here.

'I enjoy coming into training and like the fact that you can go into the weekend and know you're playing. It's an unbelievable feeling for a footballer.

'When I signed for Tottenham, Martin Jol didn't sign me – he didn't even know me, it was Damien Comolli, so you come to a club and the gaffer doesn't even know you.

'Then Jol was sacked and Juande Ramos came. I played a couple of games and he told me I wasn't good enough.

'When Harry Redknapp came, the people told him "Boateng is crazy. He's a good footballer, but he's stupid".

'Harry has said the same thing in the newspapers as well. He says he didn't know me but knew me from what people said.

'When they first told me that Portsmouth wanted to sign me, the first thing I asked was "does the gaffer or the chairman want to sign me?"

'When I came here, I had a three-minute talk with the gaffer and it was perfect.

'He gave me so much and now every game, I try to give it back to him.'
Boateng's growing maturity has shone through in taking responsibility on the pitch.

But the 22-year-old knows Mrs Boateng and young son Jermaine have played their part in helping him settle on the south coast – and his favourite tattoo on his back depicts both of them.

Boateng explained: 'I feel I have matured now. I'm married and I'm a father now, so everything changes.

'When you are young, you do stupid things and I never thought that I would grow up and have a baby. I always thought I would be single, cool and everything else. But it's all changed now!

'It's only down to Jennifer. If she was not there, I would still be flying around somewhere.

'They told me I was the biggest talent in Germany and suddenly I thought I was the best player in the world.

'But she said "who do you think you are? Sit down here".'

He added: 'I've got maybe 21 or 22 tattoos, but I've got one of my wife and my son on my back which took nine hours to do and that's my favourite.'

Has all the potential to be a top player in the Premiership of that there is no doubt. We know that Paul Hart is a good judge of young players and I feel PFC will reap the rewrds in years to come of some of the younger ones coming through.

He is obviously well liked by the players and they will sweat blood for him on the pitch. Tactics have often been brought into question and maybe the thought of losing gets the better of him at times when we should be going for the kill and finishing teams off.

Maybe, just maybe, with Grant over seeing, guiding and offering words of wisdom they may well just get us out of this mess that was none of Hart's making.

We need a result at Stoke and I just hope that the defence is able to keep Fuller and whats 'is name at bay for 90 minutes.

Talking of tattoos Reality-man! Brighton beat one hell of a tattoo on your goal last week! Norwich again today!

And you have the temerity to call Westwood a loser!

Get down to Derby Road and see if one the residents can make a man of you!

Dindane and HH being fit is a massive plus for us and if HH is fit then for my money i would put him straight in, Stoke are a goo side and it will be a great result up there, but it is a result that we desperately need. with the games coming up this is massive and are second best chance for points for the next couple of months so we must get something imo.

would like to see a few changes for this one and add some extra dimensions to our approach, instead of putting everything straight through the middle like in the dreaded diamond!

4411, would be a good choice imo for this one.

We need to get Boetang on the ball much more than we did in the last game and the wide players natural instincts to get forward will give him options and allow him to get in the box.

Come on Hart change it about the diamond is no good away from home and is a little more effective at Fratton Park because the pitch is probably the smallest in the league? PUP

I think you will find that our ground is probably in the mid size(it looks amaller because of the closeness of the stands) and stokes is one of the smallest.
But I agree we can't use the diamond formation and give them room down the wings.
If we can deal with the aerial bombardment then I think we will get something from this game.

Ha that will teach me to look before i comment?

Just found a site that has all the dimensions and your dead right we are mid table on pitch sizes.

as you say it maybe the close proximity of the stands that makes our pitch look a lot smaller.

The other i found surprising was that Arsenal was not in the top 3!

When Hart signed Boateng I thought he had completely lost his marbles. However, he's turned out to be a decent signing and I've been impressed.

A draw today will do for me.

Oh and just noticed that Norwich got a good result yesterday to keep my dream alive of seeing Saints in the conference within 2 years. They'll meet Havant & 'Ville on way up!

A comment from me taking into account posts on another thread:

I have to say I am getting rather sick of the doom and gloom mongers who now tell me I am not allowed to mention othger teams results and take it as a positive. Why on earth not I ask you.

These self same people say we MUST win at Stoke, why... it is just one game. They also moan and say teams like Stoke are better than they were last season, well if they are then why MUST we win there?
Last season Stoke lost just 4 home games, Chelsea, Everton, Man U and Wesat Ham (end of season game).

So if we MUST win as they are a lesser team I suggest you look again and look without your dark glasses on. If we win there it is a superb result but a draw would be as well.

Losing is what most teams do at Stoke so what is the problem?

THe d&g people are back and back with what they do best, telling us we are blind and not looking at reality - well above is reality and I suggest some people look at it.
