Pompey striker Jermain Defoe hit home as England gained a 5-1 World Cup qualifying victory over Kazakhstan.
The Fratton favourite came off the bench late on to complete the scoring - and keep himself very much in the frame for a starting spot.

The scoreline was flattering on England, though, who went into the break at 0-0.

Rio Ferdinand eased nerves when he headed home from a corner before an own goal made it 2-0.

But there were red faces around Wembley when Ashley Cole's shocking back-pass enabled Zhambyl Kukeyev to slot past Pompey keeper David James.

England's class told in the end, though, as Wayne Rooney bagged a double before Emile Heskey played in Defoe for number five.

Pompey's Peter Crouch and Glen Johnson were unused substitutes for the hosts.

Heskey was a waste of space, Defoe should have been on at the break.

Totally agree. Heskey is ok at holding the ball up but that's it. A striker playing for England who has scored one goal all season...Jermain Defoe can hold the ball up, has lightning pace, has great vision and first and foremost is probably the best natural goalscorer in England. Should start in Belarus on wednesday

I can't understand why the in-form English strike-force was not selected. Defoe is top scorer in the Premier league, and Crouch, after a slow start, is also finding the net. When England have had problems scoring goals, then surely the answer is to select those that can score them. We are told that Heskey was selected because 'he sets up goals' for others! So does Peter Crouch, and also scores a few himself.

We Can Do It

Today's Vote

Is Tony Adams right to make changes to the Pompey side who beat Blackburn?
Adams should stick to the side that earned him his first win at Fratton Park
He should only change things around if there are injuries
If Campbell and Kranjcar are fit they should start
Davis deserves a starting role after his heroics against Blackburn
With a heavy fixture schedule coming up, changes are needed
