POMPEY'S hopes of closing the gap on fifth-place Everton and overtaking Aston Villa were dealt a blow at Eastlands.
The 3-1 defeat meant the Blues are now seventh in the table, four points behind the Toffees and a point behind Martin O'Neill's resurgent Villa.
Benjani came back to haunt his old club after he scored City's third goal.
John Utaka scored the Pompey goal midway through the first half, cancelling out Darius Vassell and Martin Petrov's earlier strikes.
But Hermann Hreidarsson's red card just before half-time effectively ended the fightback as he pulled down Vassell.
Niko Kranjcar and Utaka both hit the bar as Pompey improved in the second half.
Milan Baros also had a chance to open his Pompey goal account, but he was unable to find a way past the on-rushing Joe Hart.
At the other end, Benjani had no problems in finding the back of the new.
He fired low past David James after turning Distin to give Sven-Goran Eriksson's side a vital home win.
