Hawks poor start continues

The Hawks paid the price for a woeful display as they slipped to a 1-0 Blue Square South defeat against Bromley at West Leigh Park as their miserable start to the season continued.
The opening 45 minutes in particular made a mockery of the Hawks title favourites label leaving manager Shaun Gale with a few headaches.

'I am tearing my hair out because players are not doing what they have been asked to do,' he said.

'For the first 45 minutes they murdered us and we were all over the show.

'We didn't do our jobs, we had no shape, and it becomes difficult then.

'The pennies need to drop with a few of the players and they have to stop believing all the hype about us being favourites.

'We haven't done the ugly side of the game again and that needs to change.'

After conceding the quickest goal of the Blue Square South season last weekend, the Hawks were almost caught cold at the start again as Anthony Joseph's second-minute header crashed out off the underside of the bar.

The visitors continued to outplay the Hawks and it was only a matter of time before their breakthrough came.

When the inevitable happened on 16 minutes, though, the home side were the architects of their own downfall.

Gary Holloway has been one of the Hawks best players so far but with all his experience he should never have allowed himself to lose possession in a dangerous position.

As a result the Hawks conceded a free-kick right on the edge of the area and Louie Fazackerley brilliantly lifted his shot over the wall high into the net.

The home side were relieved to hear the half-time whistle and could consider themselves extremely fortunate to go in trailing by only a single goal.

Although the Hawks showed some improvement in the second half, creating some chances of their own, they found it impossible to break down the resilient Bromley defence.

Both Holloway and skipper Jamie Collins were presented with an open goal to shoot at but failed to hit the target.

Worryingly for Gale, the Hawks have seven strikers none of whom have scored so far this season, and with Paul Booth still injured the remedy doesn't seem obvious.

Craig Watkins added greater pace when he went on as a second-half substitute but there was still no cutting edge.

'It has been a difficult start and every team wants to beat us at the moment because of what we achieved last season,' said Gale.

'We have to forget about what has gone on before and concentrate on now.

'I believe in the squad of players that I have brought here and have every faith in them.

'They will keep working hard and we will keep working hard to turn things around.'

We Can Do It

Today's Vote

Is Tony Adams right to make changes to the Pompey side who beat Blackburn?
Adams should stick to the side that earned him his first win at Fratton Park
He should only change things around if there are injuries
If Campbell and Kranjcar are fit they should start
Davis deserves a starting role after his heroics against Blackburn
With a heavy fixture schedule coming up, changes are needed
