Younes Kaboul will improve with more games under his belt, according to Blues boss Harry Redknapp.
The towering French defender finally joined Pompey in midweek after a protracted pursuit and was handed a surprise start in midfield to plug the gap left by the sale of Pedro Mendes to Rangers.

Redknapp insisted he had few alternatives at his disposal, but remains confident Kaboul will become an important figure for the club after a difficult debut.

Redknapp said: 'I had to throw Kaboul in to play in midfield and obviously he found it difficult.

'I had to play the lad in midfield and he had not had a pre-season game. I brought Kaboul in to play centre-back, but I lost Pedro on Thursday – not that I wanted to but we needed to get some money back in.

'I also lost Sulley Muntari from last season who gave us fantastic energy.

'He could run, tackle, cover the ground and shoot. He's been a big loss.'

Redknapp did not rule out using the Frenchman in midfield again and believes his new signing will improve with match fitness.

Redknapp said: 'I didn't bring him in to play in midfield, but the lad needs to get fit.

'He hasn't had any pre-season games and you need those games to get fit. I threw him in at the deep end and it was difficult for him.'

But the Blues boss was less forgiving of his side's defensive display as the defensive bedrock that secured the FA Cup last season crumbled away alarmingly.

In fact, Redknapp was quick to vent his fury at his back four from the touchline after a series of mistakes

All four defenders looked rusty, while David James has certainly had better days in goal.

Redknapp said: 'Some of the defending was just basic errors.
'We hit a goal-kick, John Terry headed it forward and Joe Cole was suddenly through on our goal.

'As a nine-year-old kid, if you see that their defender is going to win the header, you drop off.

'It's so easy, it's almost scary.
'We ended up standing there just watching and then having to chase it. That's how we defended all day – it was poor.'

"I didn't bring him in to play in midfield, but the lad needs to get fit". Surely that's what we have the reserve games for, not the opening game of the Prem against last years runners-up!! We had Utaka, Lauren, Thomas & Mvuemba on the bench, all of whom were "fit". Then of course we have Davis & Hughes who weren't selected, so why are we playing an unfit defender in a key midfield role? It seems to me that HR had plenty of options despite his comments to the contrary, so there is obviously some hidden agenda in his mind !!

We were never going to get anything at Stamford Bridge, so fielding key squad members to get them fit for the season makes perfect sense to me. Sure there are reserve games but look at the standard - can you name half of our own reserve team? There's no substitute for the real thing.

Have to agree with Paul99, you should never put a player into a game awayto a top 4 side to get him fit. I believe Harry gambled and got it horribly wrong. Also a major mistake going to 4-4-2 against a 5 man, high quality midfield like Chelsea's. Out numbered, out skilled and out thought in midfield caused no service to the forwards and the outcome.........a defeat. 4-4-2 at home is one thing but with the loss of Muntari and no obvious wide player, when away from home against the teams expected to finish in top half in my opinion, it's a non starter.

Having seen Harry's recent interview on Sky I can only assume that Sean Davis was one of the players he was eluding to about happy to stay on the bench. Why else would he not play, unless injured of course? Reading into it, either Sean, or Pedro had to go along with others, and we know Harry didn't want it to be Pedro.

If sure if called upon to play, Sean would have given us 100% effort. Besides, could have been an opportunity to put him in the shop window.

We Can Do It

Today's Vote

Is Tony Adams right to make changes to the Pompey side who beat Blackburn?
Adams should stick to the side that earned him his first win at Fratton Park
He should only change things around if there are injuries
If Campbell and Kranjcar are fit they should start
Davis deserves a starting role after his heroics against Blackburn
With a heavy fixture schedule coming up, changes are needed
