Harry Redknapp promised Niko Kranjcar: There's a place for you in my team.
The cultured Croat has been out of the frame for the past seven weeks after damaging ligaments in his right ankle.

Now he is on the road to recovery and last week began running outside for the first time since the blow.

In Kranjcar's absence, Nadir Belhadj and Armand Traore have been snapped up on season-long loans.

The duo have formed an impressive partnership down Pompey's left, sparking suggestions he may struggle to get back in the team.

The former Hajduk Split star is expected to return to full training by the end of the month.

And when fully fit, Redknapp is adamant he has a big part to play in Pompey's success.

He said: 'Niko is coming back, hopefully by the back end of the month, which is a big bonus for us.

'He's a top, top player in my opinion and there will always be a role for him in my team, no doubt about that.

'The lad is a cracking footballer. I just have to get him fit and then look at getting him into the team.

'Someone like Niko makes you stronger. He's an international player, a quality performer on the world stage – any manager would want him in their team.

'He can create something out of nothing, come up with a bit of magic that no-one else can.

'There are not many of him around in the Premier League at the moment, that's for sure.

'Obviously, Armand and Nadir have done fantastic down that left for us since they came to the club, but Niko can play in other positions.

'He has played a lot on the left for us but he can also go on the right – he's naturally right-footed – or he could operate behind the front two if you wanted.

'The lad gives us options but first I just want to get him fit and then see what happens.'

Kranjcar has made 72 appearances and scored seven goals following his August 2006 arrival.

After an initial season settling in, he went on to become an automatic Redknapp choice, starting 34-successive matches last season.

He shone in the process – his classy talents the chief attacking threat from midfield – scoring five goals.

But he damaged ligaments while playing for Croatia against Slovenia in August in the World Cup qualifiers.

Now Pompey are hopeful the 24-year-old can be back before November.

could we employ niko on the right of a 4-4-2?

He is naturally right footed so would be better there than on the left where he never went on the outside but always cut back. Or maybe he could play in the middle with Diarra?

I would think on the right-side of midfield would be favourite provided everybody is fit.

I think when we play away we should play him just behind either Crouch or Defoe in a 4-4-1-1. He would be quite a good playmaker I think.

Get him in the hole like where he plays for Croatia. I think we would see both the left and right foot coming into their own in that position. A truely mouthwatering prospect having Niko supporting Defoe and Crouch. Mmmmm-mmmm.

Mr Beattie to you,

If he has not been training since injured he must be looking like Mbsuema's fatter brother by now! It will take him the rest of the season to run off all those pizzas he's been enjoying whilst sat up watchin the Croatian version of Trisha..

Whether or not he's been scoffing pizza's, he'll still be a fantastic technical player and a welcome return to the team. Playing with the likes of Belhadj and Traore - two more technical footballers, especially Nadir - will see him back up to scratch in no time.

I agree with the general consensus, get him in a supporting slot behind Crouch and Defoe, and watch the magic happen.

He gives us fantastic options. Right side of midfield and a link between midfield and up front when we play 352.

The fat jokes are old and boring, yawn.

Yep agree with a lot of these, 3-5-2 with Diarra and either Diop,Davis or hughes playing the holding roles and him providing the link between midfield and attack, a fantastic prospect. He can score from anywhere and we may just find he gets even better than he already is.
Shame about Appiah, can you imagine him and Diarra either side of Kranjcar?

We Can Do It

Today's Vote

Is Tony Adams right to make changes to the Pompey side who beat Blackburn?
Adams should stick to the side that earned him his first win at Fratton Park
He should only change things around if there are injuries
If Campbell and Kranjcar are fit they should start
Davis deserves a starting role after his heroics against Blackburn
With a heavy fixture schedule coming up, changes are needed
