Pompey 2 Stoke 1

Pompey shrugged off their UEFA Cup heroics to claim a hard-fought win over a fiercely competitive Stoke City side.
Strike duo Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe were once again the men to deliver the goods in front of goal either side of half-time, while former Blues forward Ricardo Fuller replied for Stoke.

Crouch put Pompey ahead in the 25th minute with a marvellous overhead scissors kick after good work from Defoe and a pinpoint cross.

But Stoke were a threat all day from set-pieces - particularly from Rory Delap's long throw-in - and Fuller grabbed an equaliser as he bundled in from close range just two minutes after the interval.

But despite their midweek exertions, Pompey were in no mood to toss two points away and Defoe struck the winner and his sixth of the season in the 51st minute with a low drive, just moments after crashing a long-range effort against the post.

All credit goes to the players, with a long hard fought win on Thursday, it was always going to be tough to win today so this is a fantastic win.

Well done little and large for getting the goals, their partnership and understanding gets better every game!

Lets just hope we can get some of the injured players back soon so we have more quality to bring off the bench.

Great team performance, coming so soon after a very tiring but successful European match, and without the impetus of Diarra. We worked hard and could, with a bit more luck, have scored more goals - but the three points were taken after a great show of determination. Credit to Stoke for their direct play - Delap's throws are better than a corner - and they never stopped looking for another goal - but overall, yet again, our fitness and skills were too much for the opposition. Superb defensive display by Sol (who seems to have re-discovered his dominant form of last season); Great left-wing attacking by Traore and Belhadj; solid midfield from Hughes, Davis and Diop; and up front Defoe and Crouch get better and better. Well done, Harry, another top-drawer show.

Great result today the whole team played for one another. Leaves us with 12 points from 7 games, we have to be pleased with that return.
What a player Hughesy is, hardly gets a game for a year or more, never complains, comes in to the side and plays 3 immense games in a row !
What was that Sulley blokes name ?

Once again a great performance by Pompey. Defoe and Crouch have now started to work together and Crouchie is on fire at the moment. Well done Pompey and brilliant game and brilliant goal by Crouchie

Another fantastic performance. We really could have had a hatful of goals. Sol was immense and Crouchy & Defoe are developing a great understanding. What chance they will be the first choice England pairing before long?

Only downside was the disappointing atmosphere - again. Sort it out Pompey & get Westwood back to his original position in the Fratton End with his drummers. They are less of a health & safety risk than smokers and bottle tops!

Considering the schedule we have just gone through, it was a great team effort. Very hard to praise anyone player more than another. Belhadj and traore were great down the left, we have the option on belhadj but I don't think the gunners will let traore go. Hughes and davis had a great game, and crouch and defoe are well on their way to being substantial goal scorers for us. I don't think stoke had anything to offer except delap's throws and they aren't going to survive in the prem with one trick up their sleeves (although no-one is as bad as spurs at the moment!) Hope they all make the most of a well earned break, except those that are lucky enough to be called up for their country. Can't wait to see the draw on Tuesday and see where we are going to take over next! PUP.

having just learned of the the England team for next weekend. I must congratulate harry + co, having 4 players in the English squad, never know before, correct me if im wrong
