Kanu has handed Pompey a striker boost after agreeing a new deal.
The Nigerian hitman is set to seal a one-year extension to his existing agreement next week.

And the huge Blues favourite has been backed to fill the hole created by Peter Crouch's departure for Spurs.

Mark Viduka is on Paul Hart's hit list and is edging closer to arriving, while Amr Zaki remains a loan target.

Pompey are desperately short of attacking options after being forced to cash in on Crouch to repay existing debts.

But there is good news as far as Kanu is concerned, after he linked up with the rest of his team-mates in Portugal.

His representative, Samuel Okoronkwo, explained the new deal is all but complete.

He said: 'Kanu is in Portugal with the rest of the team. He would not be out in Portugal if he was not close to having a new contract.

'His presence with the team is sufficient expression of how close we are.

'There is a situation at Portsmouth being handled by Peter Storrie.

'But as far as my client is concerned though, his commitment to the club is total.

'Peter and I have had very productive discussions and talks are progressing very well.

'The understanding is there and the commitment is there. The i's will be dotted and the t's crossed shortly. I'm sure whatever is not finalised will soon be sorted.

'The conditions are right and both sides are comfortable with Kanu remaining at Portsmouth for another season.'

Pompey supporters have been dealt a succession of blows, with key players leaving this summer to generate much-needed finance and lower the wage bill.

Crouch was the latest to leave this week, leaving Hart short up front.
Okoronkwo believes Kanu is capable of filling Crouch's boots on a regular basis, despite his advancing years.

He said: 'Kanu is a gifted and talented player and will always do a good job for Portsmouth whenever called upon.

'His availability is not in question. Whenever Portsmouth require him he will be there for them.

'If Portsmouth need him every week in the Premier League he will be delighted to fulfil that role for them.'

Meanwhile, Pompey target Stephen Hunt looks certain to leave Reading after manager Brendan Rodgers indicated the midfielder has played his last game for the Royals.

is that sarcasm i hear in your post Paul????

Just wait cos Zaki will end up elsewhere also.

A potent strikeforce of Kanu & Viduka for next year after we swap Nugent for Hunt.

You are all scummers in disguise. get behind the club for goodness sake and support the man who scored you the goal to win you the FA cup last year.

Kanu still has the ability to turn a game around and he is great at holding up the ball. Towards the end of last season he was looking better than peter crouch.

I'll be the first to admit that i would have loved to see some good quality signings by now but comming on the internet and slagging off the club is not helping anything. what is the point? you are just getting yourselves down and pulling others down with you.

I will support this great club wether we are prem or league 2 and i walk away from fratton park after every home game knowing i will always be a part of somthing.

MAN UP or shut up.

There's getting down Mr BDRB (sorry refuse to type your actual name), and then there's being realistic, I was amazed today just to see the club actually make announcement let alone one that this paper had announced several weeks ago regarding the players we have signed. The doc started out by saying he would keep us in the loop and keen to hear our views, where is he now, where is story teller reassuring the fans we have to get are news on the club from rumoior and conjecture if I have to hear another report about a source close to the player/owner/chairman or ex-pompey player give thier opinion on what should be happening, I'll eat my hat.
P.S. We're British if we don't have moaning, what do we have?

If you are so keen on Kanu why didnt you ask your new found friends at the Shots to sign him.
Oh I forgot he has only signed here because nobody else will pay him the wages that we do.
Get real he is here for the money and it has nothing whatsoever to do with loyalty.
There isnt any in football.
