POMPEY have swooped to sign England under-16 international James Hurst in a deal which could rise to £1m.
The West Brom prospect has featured for both their under-18s and reserves this season.

A right-sided defender who can also play on the left, he turned 16 in January and is regarded as one of the country's brightest youngsters.

Now the Blues have stepped in to bring Hurst to Fratton Park after he turned down the offer of a new Baggies contract.

West Brom will receive an initial £250,000 compensation fee which will rise to more than £1m depending on performance-related criteria.

It is another coup for director of youth operations Paul Hart as he continues to revolutionise Pompey's youth set-up.

In their maiden season as an Academy side, they finished an impressive fourth in the table, having beaten the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham.

Another right back weve only got Johnson (the best right back in England?) Lauren, Paramot, Duffy, Crainie, and Diarra who can play there- who needs strikers anyway.

he's 16 he aint gonna play for a while yet, pamarot and lauren will probably have left by then, probably even retired? Duffy will go this summer too! why don't you lot see this as a positive move towards the future of the club. we may end up with another of the countries best right backs but instead of paying £4m we've payed less than £1m. Do you seriously think this will come out of Harry's budget, especailly with sacha wanting Champs League football now....

Baggies fans aren't too impressed that the boy had his head turned at an international appearance. I am though. He thinks Pompey is a big club so somebody did a fantastic job on him. Imagine how quickly he'll leave you if a proper club ever fancies him.

It isn't always bad business to take a young player from a yo-yo club, develop him and sell him on a few years later for a profit if it doesn't work out. Unless we give them a chance to show us what they can do, we will never know if they can make the grade. I bet Everton were grateful they gave Rooney a chance. Ok he left for a bigger club, but at a hell of a profit. That is always going to happen unless Pompey become one of the big boys and under Sacha we may well just achieve that. He's got 30 years 'til he retires !!

It's a positive move only if he gets in to the team, many great prospects never see the light of day at Fratton. Duffy was the best thing since sliced bread when we signed him, hardly ever been seen outside of preseason. Lets hope this one is different.

Until we get the academy established this is the only way to build a youth team so some will fail to amke the garde but Hart has a good track record give him a chance
